Karim Benzema has been voted the world’s best football player of the 2021/22 season. The Frenchman was the unquestionable leader of Real Madrid, who won the Champions League final and La Liga last season.

He came in at a much-needed time following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018. And he also took on the helm of Madrid after the former captain, Sergio Ramos moved to PSG. He is one of the reasons that Real Madrid is considered a powerhouse now.

 

A great supporter of the striker’s abilities is the Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez. He couldn’t hide his joy after Karim won the Ballon d’Or award. The Real Madrid president spoke warmly about the Ballon d’Or winner in an interview with the Spanish Tv channel ‘El Chiringuito’:

 

“I am delighted that Karim Benzema is at last rightly recognized as the best football player in the world. He’s earned it for many years. He’s been the best player for the past 3-4 years. He got the award a bit late, but he got it,” – he said.

 

“Karim is a combination of Ronaldo Nazario and Zidane. He is the ‘number nine’ who does the job of both of them at the same time. He moves the attack like Zidane and strikes like Ronaldo. He evolved over the years and took over the team’s leadership after Cristiano left. Today he got the prize he deserved”.

 

Benzema and his rivals to the ‘Ballon d’Or

 

Benzema, the pride of Real Madrid today, played 56 games in the 2021/2022 season. He scored a whopping 50 goals and recorded 16 assists. His outstanding efforts have helped Real Madrid win the Champions League final and the Spanish La Liga. The statistics speak for themselves for the 34-year-old, who is now officially recognized to be the Ballon d’Or winner.

 

Robert Lewandowski was, of course,  his biggest rival for the ‘Ballon d’Or trophy. He came second last year, slightly behind Lionel Messi. At the beginning of the season, it seemed that Lewy would finally grab the prize this time.

He started very well with Bayern Munich and hunted for more records in the Bundesliga. The first part of the season with Bayern Munich belonged to him. It is in the second half that Benzema jumped to a cosmic level when it mattered most.
