As the World Cup golden trophy comes closer into sight, Morocco (22nd in the FIFA World Ranking) meets quarter-final opponents Portugal (9th in the FIFA World Ranking) at Al Thumama Stadium on Saturday.

The ‘Atlas Lions’ will look to make history as the first African nation to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup, but they will have a tough fight against one of the tournament’s most in-form teams.

Morocco has impressed everyone at the World Cup and has performed unexpectedly well so far. They sensationally eliminated Spain on the penalties (3:0) in the last 16 rounds of games and extended an unbeaten run in the World Cup to five matches. They also kept a remarkable sixth clean sheet from their last seven outings.

Portugal gave a real show of power in the 1/8 final. They were downright ruthless against Switzerland. The match ended with a score of 6:1! Three goals for Portugal were scored by 21-year-old forward Goncalo Ramos (Benfica), who announced himself to the world while the ageing superstar Christiano Ronaldo watched his team’s spectacular performance from the bench. Pepe (FC Porto), Raphael Guerreiro (Borussia Dortmund) and Rafael Leao (AC Milan) also scored. Such results at this stage of the tournament are not an everyday occurrence.

Morocco’s possible starting lineup: Bounou; Hakimi, Saiss, Aguerd, Mazraoui; Ounahi, Amrabat, Amallah; Ziyech, En-Nesyri, Boufal

Portugal’s possible starting lineup: Costa; Dalot, Pepe, Dias, Guerreiro; B. Silva, Carvalho, Otavio; Fernandes, Ramos, Felix

Morocco vs Portugal World Cup 2022 betting odds

Portugal are heavily fancied in this encounter after tearing Switzerland to shreds in the last 16 rounds of games, while Morocco hung on against a colourless Spain.

Portugal enters the quarter-finals of the World Cup as one of the hot 7/10 (prob. 58%) favourites to win, Morocco are out at 5/1 (prob. 16,6%), while a draw can be backed at 11/4 (prob. 26,6 %) – all in 90 minutes.

After his impressive hat-trick against the Swiss, Goncalo Ramos might be available at 11/5 (prob. 31%) to find the back of the net again, with Cristiano Ronaldo priced at 6/4 (prob. 40%) and Bruno Fernandes at 3/1 (prob. 25%). Morocco’s Hakim Ziyech is around the 11/2 (prob.15 %) mark at the moment to score anytime.

Morocco vs Portugal – things to know and remember

The Moroccan team is walking wounded after expending significant energy in the battle against Spain. Due to injuries, the critical Maroccan duo, striker Sofiane Boufal (Angers) and defender Nayef Aguerd (West Ham United), were both substituted off against La Roja. Boufal, in particular, would be a huge loss since he’s been one of the best midfielders at the World Cup so far.

There are no current injury concerns coming into this match for the Portuguese side. Although, they are without defender Nuno Mendes (PSG), who will take no further part in the tournament after an injury in the match against Uruguay.

However, there is only one emerging question: whether Cristiano Ronaldo performs given he was sat on the bench against the Swiss.

It will be the third encounter between these two sides, with all games coming at the World Cup. Morocco beat Portugal 3-1 in 1986, knocking them out in the group stage. Portugal got their revenge in 2018, hanging on to a fourth-minute Ronaldo goal to win 1-0.

Summary

Morocco vs Portugal encounter will be the most straightforward from a tactical perspective.

Morocco are a deep-lying team with a solid defensive record built on a compact 4-4-2 set-up. They deny teams space in the final third before counter-attacking via their world-class full-backs.

But let’s be honest, despite their fierce defensive commitment, the ‘Atlas Lions’ might not be able to hold off one of the tournament’s potent teams at bay for 120 minutes.

Portugal have proven they can break down bunkered sides when they bagged two goals against Uruguay and defeated a defensive-minded Switzerland.

Once Portugal score their opener and Morocco come out of their shell, this match will turn into a high-way for the ‘Selecao‘, and one of Portugal’s rising stars or perhaps even Cristiano Ronaldo, will find a way to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

Match 60: England vs France – Saturday, 10.12.2022, 7 pm (GMT)

  VS

England to win Draw   France to win

2/1 (prob. 33%)   9/4 (prob. 31 %)   7/5 (prob. 42%)

PLEASE NOTE: The average odds comparison, source – oddschecker.com. The odds are valid on the day of the article’s publication and may be subject to change before the start of the game.

England (5th in the FIFA World Ranking) are now among the serious contenders for the golden trophy, and if they perform as they are capable against France (4th in the FIFA World Ranking) and beyond, there’s no reason why the ‘Three Lions’ cannot win the World Cup this winter.

Despite a few hairy moments in the opening stages, they had little trouble beating Group A runners-up Senegal 3-0 on the night. Now it’s the World Cup holders France next, with Kylian Mbappe (PSG) hitting top form before Morocco or Portugal await in the semi-finals, and then Argentina, Brazil, Croatia or Netherlands in the final.

France will be hoping to defend their World Cup crown in Qatar. They were kings of the world four years ago, beating Croatia 4-2 in the final game of the 2018 tournament to secure their second crown. With a young team full of potential and quality, ‘Les Bleus will likely use that as a springboard for more success. It indeed served them well in Group D and against Poland in the quarter-finals.

England’s possible starting lineup: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw; Bellingham, Rice, Henderson; Saka, Kane, Foden

France’s possible starting lineup: Lloris; Kounde, Varane, Upamecano, T. Hernandez; Tchouameni, Rabiot; Dembele, Griezmann, Mbappe; Giroud

England vs France World Cup 2022 betting odds

England and France have met each other 31 times, with England winning 17 games to France’s 9, while 5 matches have been drawn.

The ‘Three Lions’ are slight underdogs in this match with the odds 2/1 to win (prob. 33%), primarily based on the run of play as France look nearly unbeatable with their first-choice lineup in this tournament.

Defending champions head into the duel as the 7/5 favourites for the win (prob. 42%), with a draw priced at 9/4 (prob. 31 %) – all odds within 90 minutes.

If you think this game might go the distance, you might find extra-time odds at 11/2 (prob. 15%) while England are priced at 9/1 (prob. 10%) to win on penalties.

England vs France – things to know and remember

The biggest question for England is the status of the striker Raheem Sterling (Chelsea), who went back home to care for his family after a break-in at his residence. It still needs to be determined whether Sterling will rejoin the squad in Qatar for the remaining games.

Striker Callum Wilson (Newcastle United) is dealing with a muscle injury, which is thought to be minor. Meanwhile, defender John Stones (Manchester City) ended up with a hamstring injury during the Senegal win.

France have enjoyed a mostly clean bill of health since the start of the World Cup. Only one player, defender Lucas Hernandez (Bayern Munich), is no longer available from the roster, having torn his ACL in the opening game. But his brother Theo Hernandez (AC Milan) has filled in admirably at the full-back position.

England vs France – last 3 matches in all competitions:

  • England and France last met in a competitive environment in Euro Cup Finals 2012, when they tied 1-1 in the group stage.

  • The last time one side won against the other in a competitive match was in Euro 2004, when France topped England 2-1.

  • The last time both teams met at a World Cup was in 1982, with England winning 3-1.

2. Australia (Q) 3 2 0 1       3       4 -1 6
3. Tunisia 3 1 1 1       1        1   0 4
4. Denmark 3 0 1 2       1        3 -2 1

France – Australia 4:1

France – Denmark 2:1

France – Tunisia 0:1

1/8 France – Poland 3:1

Summary

Neither England nor France have been seriously tested so far, and both teams will discover that the latter stages of the World Cup feel nothing like the earlier rounds when the ball possession dominance was guaranteed.

The result of Saturday’s game could come down to how well the respective nations can contain Bellingham and Mbappe’s star qualities.

From here on in, it is all about what both teams do in the transitional moments of the game. France appear better placed to capitalise here, and they will probably send the ‘Three Lions’ home empty-handed again.
