FIFA GROUP C 2022: Argentina vs Saudi Arabia 2:1 (1:0) – Tuesday, 22.11.22.

Five minutes that shook Argentina! Saudi Arabia surprised the football world.

  VS

What a day it was for the Saudis at the Lusali Stadium in Al Daayen. ‘Green Falcons’ came from behind to record an astonishing 2-1 victory against two-time world champions Argentina (3rd in the FIFA World Ranking) in their FIFA Group C 2022 opener on Tuesday.

Seven-time ‘Golden Ball’ winner Lionel Messi opened the scoring list from the penalty spot early in the first half. Saudi Arabia (51st in the FIFA World Ranking) turned the game on its head remarkably, courtesy of second-half strikes from Saleh Al Shehri and Salem Al Dawsari.

Argentina, regarded by many of us as one of the main favourites to go all the way in Qatar, were not in their finest form on Tuesday.

At the same time, Saudi Arabia managed the game brilliantly and pulled off an incredible shock on the world’s biggest stage, ending Argentina’s 36-game unbeaten streak.

After the first goal for Argentina in the 10th minute, none of us thought the Saudis could or would turn that match around, but this is what’s amazing about the game of football. They got the equalizing goal in the second half, which put oxygen in their veins and let them fight back in the most spectacular way. It was a magnificent overall team performance, collective effort and well-deserved win.

From the beginning of the match, the ‘Albicelestes’ controlled the game and, from time to time, tried to surprise their rivals’ defence.

Most of the time, the Saudis were pushed back to deep defence, working off-side traps pretty well.

We’re all wondering what happened in the Saudis’ dressing room at the half time that helped them to turn around the game so radically.

In the second half, they were not just going for the levelling goal but for the second one needed to win the match too. The major sensation happened pretty quickly, with Herve Renard’s players, Al Shehri and Al Dawsar, beating the Argentine goalkeeper consecutively in the 48th and 53rd minutes.

From that moment, the ‘Green Falcons’ took advantage of their momentum and pushed forward, which worked for them brilliantly. They created many scoring chances but with no luck.

It was a disastrous start to what was expected to be a strong campaign for Lionel Messi’s side. Argentina deserved to lose. The referee gave them enough time (14 minutes of injury time) to change the course of the game, but they were unable to do that. They didn’t create any scoring chances towards the end of the match and looked utterly lost in the game’s final moments.

A lot of credit for the win must go to the Saudi Arabia manager, Herve Renard. He seemed to get it spot on tactically, and his players carried out his instructions really well.

In their match against Poland on Saturday 26, Saudi Arabia will try to pull off another stunning result. Meanwhile, Argentina will play Mexico in hopes of bouncing back from their disappointing defeat.

Summary

The bookmaker’s predictions about this game were slightly off this time. Saudi Arabia went beyond any measure of expectation and surpassed even the boldest forecasts of experts who warned of their potential. The Saudis gave a show of their strength but also exposed Argentina’s weaknesses.

The ‘Green Falcons’ will face Poland in the second round of Group C encounters, and if they squeeze a point out of the game, they’ll find themselves in an excellent position to fight for the last 16.

We must remember, though, that Saudi defender Yasser Al Shahrani, who was a victim of a terrifying collision with his goalkeeper, will not be able to perform against Poland. Al Faraj’s performance is also in question.

Argentina will play for their lives in the encounter against Mexico next Saturday, and a win is a must for them. A draw and one point might not be enough to progress to the last 16, even as runners-up of Group C.

FIFA GROUP D 2022: Denmark vs Tunisia 0:0 (0:0) – Tuesday, 22.11.22

The bookmaker’s candidate for the World Cup ‘dark horse’ was stopped! The Danes missed their chance.

  VS

Although the “Danish dynamite” were the odds on favourite of the clash, the “Eagles of Carthage” knew how to stand up and create dangerous scoring situations. Even diehard Tunisian fans dared not expect such a result!

With all the odds, the Danish side was expected to win handily against Tunisia, but the game ended with a goalless draw at the Education City Stadium.

However, two goals were scored, but Tunisian forward Issam Jebali was off-side in the first half, and Dane Andreas Olsen in the second.

The Danes struggled to take control of the game from the start. The Tunisians played hard and aggressively and smashed their rivals’ attacks. Had they been luckier, they would have taken the lead early in the game when Mohamed Drager struck at goal. The ball bounced off one of the Danish defenders and narrowly missed the goal.

The Scandinavians fought to the end, and it looked like they would be awarded a penalty kick in added time. Eventually, VAR decided that the Tunisian’s handball did not qualify for the penalty spot.

Fate did a lot to prevent “Danish Dynamite” from winning this meeting, as evidenced by Andreas Christensen’s strike against the post in the 69th minute.

The 0:0 draw seems to be fair for both sides. It was the first goalless draw at this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Summary

Against all the odds, Tunisia held out for a draw against a very good Danish team and got their deserved point. Their energy level was high.

They were switched on mentally and defensively around the box, seeing dangers, winning headers, making tackles, and getting players into forward areas of the pitch. They didn’t have a huge amount of goal-scoring chances, but the fundamentals were at least there.

Because of that, we expect Tunisia to put on a great performance in their next match against Australia. ‘The Carthage Eagles’ have a very good chance of winning it if they continue this level of play.

On the other hand, Denmark will face France in the second round of Group D encounters. And let’s be honest, it will take a Saudi level miracle for the Danes to get even a point from this match.

One thing is certain here. This goalless draw makes both the French and the Aussies well happy.

‘Les Bleus’ will be delighted as it lets them grasp Group D strongly. At the same time, the ‘Socceroos’, despite losing the opening game against France, were given hope of progression to the last 16.

FIFA GROUP C 2022: Mexico vs Poland 0:0 (0:0)Tuesday, 22.11.22

Poland draws against Mexico on their own request. Lewandowski’s drama. The Polish captain misses a penalty.

  VS

The result was exactly what we expected in our game predictions. Polish physical strength faced Mexican flair, and both teams played out a stalemate game against each other.

The Polish national team started the match with an interesting defensive set-up. Although the Poles often played with three defenders recently, they came out with four men at the back this time around, indicating their defensive intentions.

In the first half, Poland’s play did not thrill. They didn’t create many scoring opportunities and had only one shot off-target. Although Mexicans stayed on their front foot most of the time, the Polish goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, confidently defended all their strikes.

Despite Lewandowski’s best efforts, the ‘White Eagles’ failed to offer much going forward. Mexican defending trio Moreno, Cesar Montes, and Edson Alvarez kept the Polish striker quiet.

In the 26th minute, Mexico created their first real scoring opportunity. Hector Herrera sent a cross into the Polish penalty area for Vega, who out jumped Matty Cash but sent the header just wide.

The game didn’t change much in the second half. The Mexicans were still more creative on the ball, while the Poles tried to look for their chances on the counter-attacks.

The one dream opportunity that could have given Poland three points came in the 58th minute. Robert Lewandowski won a penalty kick when he burst into the area between Montes and Moreno before going to the ground following a challenge from the latter in the penalty box.

Unfortunately, the Polish national team captain struck the ball weakly and too close to the middle of the goal. Mexican goalie Ochoa guessed correctly and dived to his left to deny the Barcelona striker’s tame effort.

The game’s enthusiastic tempo gradually dipped before the full-time whistle as both nations sought to avoid defeat rather than search for a win in their World Cup opener.

Goals:

Yellow Cards: Frankowski (76′) – Sanchez (29′), Moreno (56′)

Mexico:  Ochoa – Sanchez, Montes, Moreno, Gallardo – Herrera (71′ Rodriguez), Alvarez, Chavez – Lozano, Martin (71′ Jimenez), Vega (84′ Antuna).

Poland: Szczesny – Cash, Glik, Kiwior, Bereszynski – Krychowiak – Kaminski, Szymanski (72′ Frankowski), Zielinski (87′ Milik), Zalewski (46′ Bielik) – Lewandowski.

Summary

Both teams had to settle for a share of points in this encounter, and neither took full advantage of the earlier result in Group C.

A result which saw Argentina (two-time world champions) suffer a surprising 2:1 defeat against Saudi Arabia, who, against all the odds, finished at the top of the group that evening.

With one point each after the first round of Group stage games, Poland and Mexico are equally favoured to progress to the last 16, with a slight indication towards the Mexican team. Even the Top spot in Group C is still open for both of them.

FIFA GROUP D 2022: France vs Australia 4:1 (2:1)Tuesday, 22.11.22

‘Les Bleus’ run over ‘Kangaroos’. Strong start for the defending champions, as Olivier Giroud equals Thierry Henry’s record.

  VS

Only for a moment did the possibility of another upset hang in the air at the World Cup Finals in Qatar. Australia took a quick lead in the match against France, but the world champions showed their true form, rising to the challenge. ‘Les Bleus’ replied with four unanswered goals against the ‘Kangaroos’ and made a successful start to their battle to defend the championship title.

The French national team, however, was extremely unlucky before the tournament. They lost several key players to injuries like Benzema, Kante or Kimpembe. That’s why we were all wondering what shape the defending champions were in.

And it didn’t start well for them.

It was as early as the ninth minute when it seemed like another World Cup surprise at the Al Janoub Stadium when Australia unexpectedly took the lead after a goal by Craig Goodwin. The French looked like children in a fog at the beginning, and Australia was able to exploit the world champions’ weak period of play.

‘Les Bleus’ were getting things rolling slowly. They might have even lost a second goal when Duke kicked hard at goal in the 22nd minute, but the ball narrowly missed the post.

The world champions managed to equalise six minutes later, with the Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot squeezing the ball into the net.

And the French onslaught began.

In the 33rd minute, the Australians made a mistake on the counter-attack. Adrien Rabiot took the ball, ran into the penalty area and laid it off to Giroud, who completed the formalities and scored the second goal for France.

‘Les Bleus’ dominated the encounter in the second half, and we witnessed spectacular offensive play from Didier Deschamps’ players.

In the 68th minute, Kylian Mbappe took advantage of Dembele’s pass and hit the net with a headshot. Three minutes later, Giroud put the ball into the net for the second time.

The striker thus scored his 51st goal for the national team, equalling Thierry Henry in the ranking of France’s all-time Top Scorers.

In the end, the French fizzled out but fully controlled the match. The Australians were unable to fight back.

Goals: Rabiot 27′, Giroud 32′,71′, Mbappe 68′ Goodwin 9′

Yellow Cards: Duke, Irvine, Mooy

France: Lloris – Pavard (89. Kounde), Konate, Upamecano, L.Hernandez (13. T. Hernandez) – Griezmann, Tchouameni (76. Fofana), Rabiot – Dembele (76. Coman), Giroud (89. Thuram), Mbappe

Australia: Ryan – Atkinson (85. Degenek), Souttar, Rowles, Behich – McGree (73. Mabil), Mooy, Irvine (85. Baccus) – Leckie, Duke (56. Cummings), Goodwin (74. Kuol)
